Following success at junior level with Welsh titles and representations, Matt joined Team Thie in 2013 during his 1st year at Cardiff Metropolitan University. In his first year under the guidance of Thie he represented Wales, gained a 6TH place finish at the BUCS indoor 1500m championships, 5th place at the BUCS outdoor 3000m steeple championships and a team bronze medal at the BUCS cross country championships. During his second year Matt placed 37th at BUCS cross country, 5th at BUCS indoor 1500m championships and won the Welsh senior indoor 1500m title. Matt redshirted his final year to gain an extra year of eligibility in America.

After his undergraduate degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University where he achieved a first-class honours degree in Sport and Exercise Science, Matt headed stateside and joined the NCAA system like many other past Team Thie athletes. He attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and competed in the prestigious NCAA division 1 system. He achieved success breaking the school 3000m record and gained multiple all-conference honours along with all-region and all-academic accolades. Matt returned to Cardiff Metropolitan University to study his PGCE and to continue being coached by Thie. Since returning Matt has gained two Welsh senior vests, a new 10k PB of 30:21 and achieved a 17th place finished at BUCS cross country championships along with winning the Welsh senior inter regionals cross country championships.
